Abe is a very versatile illustrator who has, during the past 35 years, earned over 100 awards of excellence in professional art competitions, some of them honest.
He works in a studio (containing old tin toys, a carousel horse and jukebox) with a breathtaking Pacific sunset view (often above clouds) on the third floor of a post-mod Greek Island-Miami Vice house he designed on a Laguna Beach California hillside. The other walls are filled with native masks, folk art and tribal carvings from all over; many acquired on occasional wanderings to the South Pacific, the Orient, the Northwest, the Southwest and Mexico. The place is surrounded by a tropical mini-rain forest.
Abe has worked in many forms of stylistic expression from watercolor and cartoons to airbrush and pop art or deco, to serious woodcut and fine line engraving. And, for a diversity of clients, from blue chip to no chip, from high-tech to Mexican food, entertainment, hotels, airlines, etc... He has done plenty of advertising projects along with publications, posters, music albums, TV commercials, billboards, logos and games.
Meanwhile, back at the drawing table, he has a continually renewing fascination with the subjects he is called upon to illuminate, seeking to transform his clients expectation into artwork that stimulates, motivates and informs; that surprises, delights and celebrates.
Recent lucky clients have included Disney, Toyota, Home Savings, Bank of America, Sunkist, Smuckers, Mistic Juice, Tyson, America West, USA-opoly, Scholastic Press, IBM, Global Village, Farmers Insurance, and yada, yada, yada. A UCLA graduate, he began his career in New York City of the 1960s. He has also taught at Art Center and California State University. |
